People who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender LGBT are members of every community. They are diverse, come from all walks of life, and include people of all races and ethnicities, all ages, all socioeconomic statuses, and from all parts of the country. The perspectives and needs of LGBT people should be routinely considered in public health efforts to improve the overall health of every person and eliminate health disparities.
A year anniversary is a great accomplishment, a result of the efforts of so many involved and dedicated members. AGLP is now recognized as the oldest professional LGBTQ organization in America, but many of the stubborn and intractable issues surrounding our creation in still exist. We remain a member organization first and foremost with a commitment to serving our members.
To achieve this mission, GLMA utilizes the scientific expertise of its diverse multidisciplinary membership to inform and drive advocacy, education, and research. In fact, the full scope of the LGBTQ health agenda includes breast and cervical cancer, hepatitis, mental health, substance abuse, tobacco use, depression, access to care for transgender persons and other concerns. Over the past three decades, GLMA has tackled many initiatives and projects.
The Lesbian and Gay Advisory Board was created on February 6, and is comprised of ten 10 voting members five 5 women and five 5 men appointed by individual Council members. Each member of the Board shall serve a two-year term commencing June 1st following a general municipal election. The City Council shall endeavor to appoint members who represent the specific Advisory Board focus as well experts in the field. Members shall be reflective of the demographic and geographic diversity of the City.
With less 50 openly LGBTQ elected officials across America at any level of government, our founders understood that boosting our numbers in public office would be key to advancing equality. In creating Victory Fund, they set out to build a network of supporters who pledged to assist viable LGBTQ candidates endorsed by the organization. The Foundation begins training future candidates and campaign workers to help LGBTQ leaders achieve careers in public service.
